Promoting, through education, the safe imaging diagnosis in Latin America, with an emphasis on radiological protection, is the mission of Latin Safe. Health continues to evolve, as does the area of radiology as new equipment and solutions emerge, but care remains.

The effect of leaving electrically charged environments and materials with the application of ionizing radiation can harm human health when not used properly. Therefore, it is very important to update yourself on the topic and know the four fundamental principles of radiological protection activities:

JUSTIFICATION: either from practice or from individual medical exposures to radiation, in which it is evident that the benefit generated by the use of radiation is greater than the damage caused by its application. This justification for radiological exams must be done individually, considering the need for exposure and the particular characteristics of each person.

OPTIMIZATION OF RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION: it aims to preserve the safety and health of people exposed to ionizing radiation in hospitals and other places where radiation equipment is used (patients, professionals and the general public) focusing on dose reduction and on number of people exposed to radiation.

LIMITATION OF INDIVIDUAL DOSES: applies to professionals exposed to ionizing radiation and the general public, but not to patients. The limits are calculated in annual doses, considering the magnitude of the effective and equivalent doses, and the organ of the human body affected by radiation – check the table, according to the Norm of the National Nuclear Energy Commission of Brazil (CNEN NN 3.01):

ACCIDENT PREVENTION: in workplaces, with risks considered and analyzed in the design of facilities and equipment; in addition, in work procedures that involve the use of radiation sources or radioactive material, aiming at reducing possible accidents.
