The first Forum of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging of the Brazil`s Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) was held on July 5 and had as its theme radiological protection; the expectation is that it becomes an annual event. CFM had the partnership of the Brazilian College of Radiology (CBR) in the organization.

The forum opening counted on Jecé Freitas Brandão (2nd vice-president, CFM); Federal Counselor Dr. Aldemir Humberto Soares (Coordinator of the Technical Chamber of Diagnostic Imaging, CFM); Dr. Alair Augusto Sarmet (president, CBR) and Maria Perez (authority on radiological protection at the World Health Organization – WHO) by videoconference.

Maria Perez spoke about the importance of radiological care and the WHO concern with the challenges of preserving patients and professionals who work in radiology regarding the radiation emitted in the exams. And the concern with the health of radiology professionals was a theme raised by Dr. Aldemir Soares.

Two round tables were part of the event in the morning. The first one on justification and optimization in the context of “Bonn Call for Action” and the second on initiatives aimed at the education of professionals, patients and the general population about the application of ionizing radiation in imaging tests.

Demands, regulation and perspectives were also discussion guidelines. At the end of the presentations, the participants were able to question the professionals’ performance, the need for educational campaigns aimed at physicians and patients, and the inclusion of radiation protection classes in medical courses.
