Q&A on SPR’s Radiological Protection Study Group

Posted on: 2019-06-14

At the last meeting of the SPR’s Radiological Protection Study Group on June 5, Physician Renato Dimenstein and Dr. Hilton Muniz Leão Filho, Latin Safe president, divided the meeting into two stages. The first one consisted of bringing the main doubts in radiological protection applied in dose parameters sent by radiologists, physicists and technologists to the initiative; and the second, to present cases of radiation doses in abdominal exams.

Questions commented:
What are the radiographic dose descriptors?
What are the dose limits on computed tomography (CT)?
Do the dose measurements of the CT device represent the dose in the patient?
What is the difference between volumetric CTDI and DLP?
How to transform DLP into effective dose in the patient?
What is the influence of the dose on the image quality? Quality depends on many factors, is there a math formula for this?
Is the relationship between dose and kVp linear?
Is the relationship between mAs and noise linear?
What is the influence of pitch on the dose on CT?
How is it possible to reduce the dose in the patient?
How can I reduce the dose on CT?
How is it possible to reduce the dose in TC using the processing algorithms?
What are the magnitudes of radiation protection?
Is there a difference between the dose on the equipment and the detector?
How to reduce the dosage in pediatrics?
How to reduce the dose in radiology?
How to reduce the dose in x-ray?
How to reduce the dose in fluoroscopy?
How to reduce the dose in the hemodynamic system?
What are the hemodynamic dose values suggestive of research?
How are possible biological effects on hemodynamics?

With these issues raised, much was said about the importance of Latin Safe and the relationship between doses. Examples of unexplained exams have been presented, showing how the law works for this in the United States and how well it is necessary to plan an exam well. The importance of the partnership between the doctor and the physicist has also been reinforced, after all, nobody asks the end user if the image / quality is good for the exam reading.

The lecture by Dr. Renato Dimenstein will be available later for those who want to review.
