Highlights of the Radiological Protection Group, September

Posted on: 2018-09-18

On September 5, it was held another edition of the meeting of the Radiological Protection Study Group of the Radiological Society os São Paulo (SPR), given by the Latin Safe President , Dr. Hilton Muniz Leão Filho. The start of the meeting was intended to welcome the participants (online and in person) and announce the finalization of changes to the Latin Safe website for this month.

Dr. Hilton also cited a few lectures he has given on the subject. “One of them was in the Feres Secaf Course, quick, 10 minutes, which translates well the central idea about ionizing radiation in imaging tests – focusing on the education of the personnel involved, whether health professionals or patients, promoting accurate and safe diagnosis, with dissemination of the optimization and justification of each exam so that maximum results are obtained,” he said.

According to him, the exam using ionizing radiation can be done safely, at the moment it is well indicated and with an optimal dose (necessary) for the diagnosis, promoting a minimal risk to the patient, often less than the benefit that the same determines – even if the current mathematical model (linear no-thresold) is accepted. Soon, the video of this class will be available on the site!

Future actions and initiatives

The need to start work in some Brazilian centers, to try to create experiences and see if they will work, was also the theme of the meeting. Radiation assessment and education for residents and physicians tend to be strongly embraced by Latin Safe this year.

The 2019 European Congress of Radiology was also highlighted: The EuroSafe initiative is organizing the 5th edition of posters dedicated to radiological protection for the event and Dr. Hilton has invited those who have already started or are developing papers to join Latin Safe for proper registration – the deadline is October 10: “I am available for any questions and, if you are interested in registering your paper, please write to us – latinsafe@latinsafe.org“.

We invite all professionals to attend the next meeting, in person or online, on October 3, 5:30 p.m. (Brasília time), at the SPR headquarters. If you are not in São Paulo, you can follow online by clicking on this link. We count on your collaboration in this important project for radiology in Latin America; see you there!
